Service learning fosters growth of civic leaders

Op-ed by James Dworkin
Service learning is the term given to a teaching method that incorporates community service into the classroom curriculum. This gives students real-world experience in their field by undertaking projects for the good of the community. ...The community impact of service learning is enormous. Looking at national Campus Compact statistics, during 2005-2006, Indiana college students performed more than 17 million service hours valued at close to $309 million. How do we compare with other states? Only California, Michigan and New York rank higher.
