Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA members served with over 15 diverse non-profits and other organizations during the National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the lives lost on September 11th. AmeriCorps members participated in service projects nationwide to give back to their communities and make a difference in the lives of those in need. Our VISTA members served at organizations such as Friends of the Rappahannock, Salvation Army, SHARE Center, and the Campus Cupboard at UW Green Bay.

Jacob Lau, Allyson Schmude, and Grace Knudsen, Campus Compact VISTA members at UW Green Bay, served with Campus Cupboard. They spent the day sorting through clothing donations for the upcoming campus Clothing Swap in October. Campus Cupboard provides food, clothing, and household items to students, faculty, and campus staff. In reflecting on her service experience, Grace stated, “Community support is integral to helping individuals with food insecurity, so it was great to see what kind of grassroots work towards food security is being done right here on campus.”

Ronan Goulden, Campus Compact VISTA member at Bates College, served with SHARE Center in Lewiston, Maine. The SHARE Center is an up-cycling organization for local schools and nonprofit organizations. In preparation for Hurricane Lee, Ronan helped move shelves inside the building, organized donations, and created craft boxes for schools in the community. “Not only was my service experience enjoyable but it was a great time to learn more about the SHARE Center, which is a community partner that I often connect Bates College sports teams with to do community-engaged work!”

Tamara Garrett, Campus Compact VISTA member at the University of Mary Washington, served with Friends of the Rappahannock, which is an organization protecting the Rappahannock River from pollution. She spent three hours helping clean up trash along the river canal and ended her service day with over 30 pounds of trash!

Molly Reid, Campus Compact VISTA member at UW Parkside, served with the Salvation Army located in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Molly helped sort through clothing donations for food pantry clients to access.
