From the president

Lily L’Oiseau, a native of Hamilton, NJ, is a dedicated student leader at Goucher College, majoring in environmental studies and engineering science, with a minor in studio art. As the eldest daughter in a large Afro-Caribbean family, Lily developed a strong sense of responsibility and purpose early on, which has shaped her commitment to environmental and community-based work. Lily’s involvement in Goucher’s community-based learning (CBL) program has been transformative. She embraces her role not just as a leader, but as a learner who values community knowledge. Her work as a student leader for CBL, particularly in guiding the Little Leopards partnership with Lutherville Lab Elementary School and TALMAR Horticultural Therapy Center, demonstrates her ability to integrate her academic studies with practical, community-based experiences. In addition to her academic and community engagement, Lily is an active member of the equestrian team, Student Government, an Arsht Presidential Diplomat, and a participant in the Goucher Summer Science Research Program.

Personal Statement

I've been in leadership roles longer than I could define what leadership truly means, and I'm still exploring its depths. As the eldest daughter in a family of 11, I've had early exposure to a diverse range of perspectives, learning to navigate divergent viewpoints from people at various life stages. When I started college, my goal was to pursue a career related to the environment. I started working with Community-Based Learning because one of my core values is to promote and uplift the well-being of my local community. I began volunteering at a nearby elementary school, helping teachers and supporting students. As a Black woman, I found that connecting with students of color in this way could positively impact their educational experience and aspirations. I also began working at a local organic farm that offers horticultural therapy for individuals with disabilities and veterans with PTSD. Engaging in this therapeutic garden work has been profoundly grounding for me. The experience reinforced the healing power of nature and the importance of community connection. My summer research at Goucher focused on exploring local plant life and improving community-environment connections. This drives my leadership and civic purpose, aiming to strengthen communities through environmental engagement.
