From the president
Josephine Rizzo, a junior at Saint Anselm College, is a student leader who is passionate about educational equity and inclusion. For the past two and a half years she has worked in a college access after-school program for youth who traditionally face barriers to accessing higher education, with a particular focus on English Language Learners. She teaches classes that focus on civic engagement, leadership, and youth empowerment. The high school students learn skills and gain confidence in their ability to advocate for themselves, their peers, and their community. As part of her role, she mentors and supports other college students working within the program. She also works with the planning team to help ensure the program continues to provide inclusive and equitable opportunities. Her commitment to inclusion extends beyond her work in this program to the larger campus community. She is an executive board member of the Student Government Association, and in this role, she works closely with members of campus to create an inclusive and positive environment through a variety of collaborative programs.
Personal Statement
Being a daughter to a teacher who has been an advocate for fellow educators and students has greatly influenced my decisions to be involved in working towards equitable education. It wasn’t until the pandemic struck that I learned of the various challenges that students and teachers face. I came to understand the difficulties of acquiring materials, ensuring quality education, and providing equitable access to resources. While listening to school board and union meetings I made it my mission to understand how the education system works and decipher what barriers need to be overcome. Thus, when I arrived on campus and saw the opportunity to work in a college access program teaching a course on youth advocacy I wrapped my arms around the program. I am now a student support manager who is directly involved in mentoring high school students. Working alongside the students I help them advocate for their education and provide support to other instructors to make impactful connections. I am also an executive board member for the student government, and I collaborate with members of the campus to create an inclusive and positive campus environment by hosting and promoting appreciation events for all members of the community.
