From the president

Abigail Wells, a second-year Public Administration and Health Promotions student at the University of Central Arkansas is a dynamic and inclusive leader dedicated to enhancing accessibility for people with disabilities on her campus and in her broader community. She is the founder of a student organization and a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to adaptive sports, both of which work to create recreational athletic opportunities for people with and without physical disabilities to enjoy together. As a Vote Everywhere ambassador, she also advocates for access to democratic processes and civic education for all of her fellow students. In her work as a grassroots organizer, Abigail has built partnerships with her campus’s Office of Accessibility Resources and Services, student organizations, student government, campus-wide coalitions, statewide nonprofit organizations and advocacy groups, and other higher education institutions. She plans to continue to pursue her passions through graduate study and a career advocating for disability rights.

Personal Statement

With the opportunity to access the skill development resources and network that the Newman Civic Fellowship provides, I will be propelled forward in my advocacy career, allowing me to have a greater impact on campus and in the community in my final two years as a UCA bear and beyond. Through my student organization, Bears Adapt, we tackle some of the common challenges faced by people with disabilities. We make space by making space, solving the root problem of not having access to an affinity group like other students may have. At our meetings, students with disabilities connect with one another, discuss issues, participate in civic education, and inform one another about resources. As a leader, I prioritize inclusivity and accessibility and have conversations with key decision-makers on campus and in our community to brainstorm opportunities to increase the accessibility of programs. I am currently working with the UCA Office of Accessibility Resources and Services to create a transition plan for UCA students with disabilities, and this spring, I will conduct accessibility checks with Bears Adapt and other student volunteers to tackle the root cause of issues related to an accessible living and learning environment.
