This article provides a brief history of higher education in this country, identifies some of the new shifts affecting higher education today, and posits two ways needed to respond to these shifts: a broader more inclusive definition of scholarship and an effective challenge to the dominant epistemology shaping our understanding of both scholarly work and engagement.
