From the president
Carter Watts, a junior in the Urban Studies program at Barnard College, works in neighborhood schools focused on community engagement to promote just and equitable learning in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). For the last three years, in her role as a STEAM student educational experience designer (SEEDs) in the STEAM in the City program, Carter designs thoughtful campus engagements for K-8 students and implements experiential curriculum with teachers in classrooms, museums, and local parks to highlight the learning opportunities of the city and its neighborhoods. She led a STEAM program for 4-6-year-old children and their caregivers in a local park to increase enthusiasm and learning in the natural environment. As an Urban Studies student, Carter investigates the built environment as well as the policies and practices that shape it with a critical eye toward advancing equity and justice. Carter also works at the Barnard Design Center, an innovative makerspace, empowering both campus and external communities to partake in the joys of creative construction. Her diverse experiences collide to make urban STEAM lessons and resources accessible to college and neighborhood communities alike.
