Personal Statement
My interest in victim rights issues began when I became a Resident Advisor at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine. I started off with a Green Dot Repsonder training and then progressed to taking suicide prevention, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing trainings. These all inspired me to become more involved in my community and provide more support for students on and off campus. I began interning this year at Esther Residence which is a transitional program for women who have been incarcerated or suffer from substance abuse. It's a place for them to gain additional support before moving out into the world on their own. These experiences have pushed me to want to provide more support and structure for students. With this I would like to start a program on campus for students to become advocates for other students. If there is an assault on campus this student could provide additional support and have additional training to be able to handle these situations. This provides extra support for students going through a difficult time, while also allowing students to be able to serve as an advocate and gain more experience.
