Every Student, Every Degree: College Civic Learning for Today’s Students and Tomorrow’s Democracy

The new report, Every Student, Every Degree, recommends that educators make college civic learning and democracy engagement a norm for all students, rather than an option for only some. Part 1 of the two-part virtual event is now available, featuring discussions on what today’s diverse students gain from CLDE-related studies and exploring student perspectives on how to make civic and democracy learning more compelling, empowering, and inclusive. This session also highlights dialogues on how collaborations across differences must become central to college civic learning and education for a diverse and divided democracy.

Every Student, Every Degree

This report’s action agenda calls on higher education leaders and policy leaders to make civic learning and democracy engagement part of all students’ degree requirements. And to broaden the meanings of “student success” to include students’ gains in civic purpose, bridge-building across difference, and career-related work on public good issues and problem-solving.

Every Student, Every Degree also features the trail-blazing efforts of two- and four-year institutions that are already working on these issues. It features examples of Full Participation Institutions (FPIs), where degree requirements include studies related to the CLDE Learning Framework featured in the report.

Part 1: Every Student, Every Degree: Committing to College Civic Learning for a Democracy in Need of Repair

Part 1 of the launch focused on the urgent need to expand college civic learning and democracy engagement to include all students, rather than just some. The program featured student voices, democracy advocates discussing higher education’s role in bridging our deep divides, and educational leaders who were already working to “scale” inclusive and transformative CLDE studies for today’s students. Today, a decisive majority of “we the people” are enrolled in postsecondary education. How can we seize this unprecedented opportunity to revitalize civic and democracy learning while propelling student success?
