Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA members give back on 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA members served with over 15 diverse non-profits and other organizations during the National Day of Service and Remembrance in honor of the lives lost during September 11th. AmeriCorps members participated in service projects nationwide—from sea to shining sea and beyond—from the east coast of Massachusetts to the Big island of Hawai’i to give back to their communities and make a difference in the lives of those in need.

They served at organizations such as Massachusetts Military Heroes fund, Library of Congress, FeedMore WNY (Western New York), Gather New Haven, Letters Against Isolation, Downtown Greens and many more!

Michael Golden, Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA member at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, completed his day of service at Working Bikes in Chicago, IL.

“Working Bikes is a non-profit that repairs used bicycles to donate and sell to those in the Chicago community. I was able to implement my experience as a bicycle mechanic and instruct some of the volunteers on simple repairs. I ended up repairing a handful of bicycles to be donated to persons they had on the waitlist for donated bicycles. It was nice to have an opportunity to use my skills in the shop again. I hope I have time to volunteer there soon.”

In the Northeast, our AmeriCorps 4 members made a positive impact through their service projects. We spent the day with the Massachusetts Military Heroes fund packing care packages for deployed servicemen and care bags for homeless veterans. I think, while I would have preferred to have had the opportunity to participate a bit more in the event, that it was really impactful to see the sheer amount of people that came out to volunteer that day who also saw the importance of giving back on a day dedicated to commemorating a national tragedy.” Mae Filbotte - Wheaton College

During the event, members in the Northeast also were able to meet and were able to support veterans and homeless vets during their 9/11 project and meet a number of wonderful AmeriCorps members in the State/National Program - Notre Dame Missionary Volunteers.
