From the president
Lauren Patrick is a student at George Washington University studying English and Political Science. Lauren has demonstrated that she is committed to civic leadership and passionate about engaging other students in building transformational partnerships with the community. As a student leader with the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service’s SMARTDC program, Lauren leads a cohort of GW students in service at a local nonprofit that builds children’s literacy through creative writing. She supports students’ training, coaches students in best practices in community building, liaises with community partners, and facilitates reflection. Lauren has been a student advisory board member for the Women’s Leadership Program, the service coordinator for her sorority, and held a research internship with a nonprofit where she gathered and interpreted data about domestic and sexual violence to inform survivor advocacy. She is also the assistant to the president of the International Association of Lawyers (UIA), an organization dedicated to protecting human rights by upholding the rule of law on an international scale, and she works with a law firm to research legislation, political leaders, and legal issues regarding domestic labor policy, focusing on child labor, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Personal Statement
I’ve worked with civic engagement and community involvement through multiple avenues throughout my life, always with an approach of equity, partnership, and shared support. My past experience with service includes four years as chair of Noblesville’s Mayor’s Youth Council with a focus placed on encouraging civic engagement in local youth, editor-in-chief of my high school student newspaper, student body government communications director, a volunteer with Cathedral Soup Kitchen, and a student board member of Noblesville Schools Education Foundation, with an additional six years as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, two years as a partner on my high school’s Special Olympics track team, one year as a member of the Women’s Leadership Program Student Advisory Board, and one year as a research intern at Becky’s Fund with a focus on domestic violence survivor advocacy. Currently, I serve as a student leader for 826DC with the Honey W. Nashman Center for Civic Engagement and Public Service, the vice president of my Alpha Delta Pi chapter, the executive assistant to the president of the Union Internationale des Avocats, and a legal assistant at Fortney & Scott LLC with a focus on human rights, child labor, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
