From the president

Indie is one of our most involved, intentional, and determined students at Agnes Scott College. She passionately invests in our community through the lens of climate action, justice, and sustainability. In alignment with her academic pursuits in biology and environmental and sustainability studies, Indie is an active student representative for the ASC Arboretum Advisory Committee and the ASC Green Team. In these volunteer roles, she has conducted research and facilitated a hands-on workshop that provided the foundation for two successful Atlanta Science Festival events in 2023 and 2024, including an expo that boasted attendance in the thousands and an on-campus tour of our Georgia native oaks. Along with her commitment to committee efforts, she is the Community Outreach Director for our student group, People for Pollinators. As of this semester, she has increased her commitment to fostering community through her roles as an Environmental Resident and Senator for Sustainability. Both of these roles intentionally engage students in ways to make positive impacts and changes at the personal, community, and systems levels. Upon completion of her summer internship as the ASC Center for Sustainability’s Wildlife Habitat & Conservation Assistant, Indie will be engaging in the work of the Climate Resilience Plan.

Personal Statement

Growing up in Decatur, Georgia was an immense privilege and joy. I spent my summers running barefoot after wasps with my dad and sister and observing birds with my mom. I come from families that immigrated from Gujarat, India, and Trinidad and Tobago, both places that are currently and will bear extreme consequences from the effects of climate change, like floods and loss of biodiversity. My parents, both scientists, taught me the role of environmental health in our everyday lives. They explained the consequences of the droughts in Georgia in 2010-2012 and the importance of water conservation. I learned the importance of reducing food waste and how to compost in my backyard. These experiences helped influence my passion for conservation and climate justice. As I got older I took a special interest in conserving waterways. I began cleaning up trash in local waterways with my family. Preserving biodiversity is crucial to the fight for climate change, as such I am interested in the importance of native species and the removal of invasives. My passion for environmental protection is fueled by the desire to preserve the natural world for future generations and the other organisms we share our world with.
