As an active student leader at Rutgers University-Newark, Haleema Sheikh showcases unwavering dedication to public service and civic engagement. After being elected as the Community Outreach Senator for the Student Governing Association (SGA) in spring 2023, Haleema initiated impactful programs addressing hunger and housing insecurity, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment. Her subsequent role as Chief of Staff for the SGA further highlights her leadership abilities as she efficiently chairs meetings, ensuring operational efficiency and progress within the student body. Participating in the Eagleton Undergraduate Associates Program, Haleema continues to hone her skills and understanding of civic engagement. This interdisciplinary certificate program, in collaboration with the Eagleton Institute of Politics, empowers students to connect political theory with real-world applications, fostering knowledge, skills, and networks for effective engagement in politics, government, and community affairs. Haleema’s vision for the Newman Civic Fellowship reflects a comprehensive understanding of societal challenges and a commitment to inclusive and responsible leadership. Her passion for environmental sustainability drives her collaboration with the Newark Alliance, addressing homelessness, housing affordability, environmental sustainability, immigration, and supporting first-generation students. She aims to foster collaborations and advocate for policies aligned with education and social responsibility, contributing to positive change and community empowerment.
Personal Statement
The exposure of campus institutions in mainstream news outlets has deeply impacted my perspective on the pivotal role higher education institutions play in society. While instances of negative publicity can be disheartening, they have motivated me to amplify the significance of these institutions through their advocacy and political work. My experience as Chief of Staff of the Student Government Association (SGA) has provided me with firsthand insight into the challenges facing our campus community. Through managing and overseeing all senators and committee initiatives, I witnessed the power of collaborative efforts in addressing social issues. This role has reinforced my belief in the transformative impact of higher education institutions when they prioritize advocacy and political engagement. By leveraging the Newman Civic Fellowship platform, I envision fostering meaningful collaborations and advocating for policies that uphold the core values of education, inclusivity, and social responsibility. Through strategic partnerships and innovative approaches, I aim to showcase the prominent role of higher education institutions, specifically Rutgers-Newark in shaping societal discourse and advancing collective well-being. By harnessing the power of advocacy and political engagement, I aspire to contribute to the positive narrative surrounding academia, highlighting its contributions to fostering informed citizenship, social justice, and community empowerment.
