From the president

Grace Desjardins, an undergraduate political science major at Pierre Laclede Honors College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL), is a remarkably engaged student leader on campus and an active volunteer in the community. She holds leadership positions in more than a few student organizations including Student Government and the Political Science Academy. She serves as a student representative for UMSL undergraduate students for the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM)—a four-university System non-partisan student lobbying organization working toward civic education and advocacy for all students. Additionally, she is very involved in the Honors College, serving as a peer mentor for other students there. An organized and thoughtful leader, Grace is enthusiastic about getting her peers civically engaged. She focuses on inclusivity in all that she does, wanting others to be engaged and empowered. For example, she helps with voter registration drives and recently took the lead on an event to inform students about government and politics through an interactive game. In the broader community, she volunteers with the Borgen Project Anti-Bullying Campaign and has worked with the RefuNet organization teaching English to refugees. With a positive demeanor, Grace does this all while still finding academic success.

Personal Statement

I am grateful for the opportunity to share my journey in civic engagement. From leading the Political Science Academy at the University of Missouri—St. Louis to advocating at the University of Missouri System level, my focus has always been on understanding the core issues behind social challenges and devising innovative, collaborative solutions. By working closely with diverse organizations and amplifying student voices in my work with both the Student Government Association and the Associated Students of the University of Missouri, I have aimed to address root causes and drive meaningful change. Whether it is through voter registration drives, volunteering in my community, or representing students at a system-wide level, I strive to be a proactive advocate for positive transformation. My passion lies in fostering inclusive dialogue and empowering communities to shape their futures. I believe that by harnessing collective action and embracing diverse perspectives, we can create a more equitable and just society. I am committed to continuing this journey of civic leadership and contributing to building a better world for all.
