Personal Statement
My interest in social justice issues and community service stemmed as a Girl Scout. Coming into college, I continued these passions of advocacy, learning how legislation is made, and searching for opportunities that fit. Starting with freshman year, I became the Lead Ambassador for UAlbany Votes, an initiative that focuses on civic engagement. In this role, I work with faculty, organizations, and my peers to increase voter registration. I have volunteered in the Albany area which began with the community service first year experience. These volunteering experiences have provided a perspective on social justice issues and the importance of civic engagement. This past year, I was a Social Justice Intern with Hillel International, coordinating service events specifically supporting a local immigrant shelter. To conclude this internship, I organized an event that showcased community service clubs on campus. This past semester, I was an intern in the NYS Assembly learning about the complexities within the New York State government and the work of various advocacy groups. In the future, I intend to continue working on social justice issues and civic engagement.
