From the president

DaNae Estabine, a junior at The University of Kansas, is one of the most prominent student leaders on campus. She aims to complete a dual J.D./Ph.D. degree and pursue work reforming the criminal justice system, first as a prosecutor and eventually as a judge. From volunteering for the fishing derby, leading major student conferences in Washington DC, and serving on KU's Mock Trial Team to caring for preschoolers, DaNae has committed to improving her world. Last year, as the Government Relations Director of the Student Senate, she helped organize the Big XII On the Hill Conference, bringing together student leaders across the country, which gave her valuable experience in diplomacy and problem-solving. This year, she has assumed the major role of Student Body Vice President. Additionally, this past summer, DaNae worked as an intern for US Senator Jerry Moran, where she had the chance to help others while learning about the legal and political systems in which she wants to work. Holistically, these experiences taught her how to approach large-scale changes she plans to make, as well as the challenges to such change--both of which will prove to be valuable in her legal career.

Personal Statement

In kindergarten, my mother initiated a Presidential Service Club at our elementary school, sparking my early engagement in community service. What began as youthful card decorations for Meals on Wheels and veterans evolved into a genuine passion for volunteerism. As I entered middle school, my mother's cancer diagnosis could have halted our community service, but it had the opposite effect—she became even more involved and a source of inspiration as she cared for others while battling her own illness. These experiences have profoundly shaped my career aspirations to be a compassionate and understanding prosecutor. Witnessing people's struggles and negative influences in their lives has fueled my commitment to addressing the root causes of social issues. My approach is grounded in rehabilitative measures, emphasizing a holistic perspective on justice. I believe in collaborative strategies that prioritize empathy and aim to break the cycles of hardship many individuals endure. My journey, from early volunteerism to aspiring prosecutor, reflects a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of understanding, compassion, and community engagement.
