On May 10, 2025, Tappan Square came alive with laughter, movement, and connection as we hosted an outdoor community-building event that brought together over 100 Oberlin students. Thanks to the support of the Newman Civic Fellowship mini-grant, I worked with the Oberlin Student Senate, and so many wonderful collaborators, to turn a simple idea into a memorable and meaningful day.

The inspiration came from my experience at Oberlin; seeing strong communities within different student groups, but few opportunities for us to come together across identities. I envisioned a space that was casual, welcoming, and joyful. When I joined Student Senate, I shared the idea, and several senators and friends offered to help make it real. Their support went a long way.

The event included a wide variety of activities: volleyball, sack race, egg race, spikeball, Connect 4, Jenga, badminton, cornhole, arrow shooting games, among others. We opened with an icebreaker to get folks talking, then moved into game rotations with volunteer facilitators guiding each station. During lunch, we enjoyed tacos from Taco Flavored Kisses, and students were encouraged to sit in mixed groups and reflect on the day so far. Watching strangers become teammates, then friends, was one of the best parts.

We also had story time sessions, where students gathered to share personal experiences, funny moments, and reflections on community at Oberlin. Thank you cards were issued throughout the day, and the energy remained high thanks to snacks, music, and a welcoming atmosphere that invited everyone to join in, whether for ten minutes or the full event.

None of this would have been possible without the support of especially Ari Marrero, Gideon Hurtado-Sher, Analicia Ruiz, Dean Goff, Thom Julian, the Bonner Center, Professor David Gurtherz, and the amazing team of volunteers who stepped up to facilitate games and logistics. Their enthusiasm and care made the event smooth and joyful from start to finish.

As I reflect, I feel immense gratitude. This event reminded me that building community doesn't have to be too complex; it starts with shared space, a few good games, and an invitation to connect. I’m proud of what we created, and even more proud of how the Oberlin community showed up for each other
