In North Central Indiana, a unique collaboration is proving that when education, healthcare, and community come together, lasting change can happen—starting with a single conversation. The North Central Indiana Healthcare Talent Alliance, launched by Indiana University South Bend and North Central Health Services (NCHS), is tackling one of the region’s most pressing challenges: the shortage of skilled healthcare professionals.
Through a coalition of educators, local employers, and community partners, the Alliance is building a career pipeline focused on four pillars: sparking early interest through education, fostering cross-sector collaboration, strengthening workforce development, and engaging local communities to improve health equity. Their mission is clear—create pathways, open doors, and build a future-ready healthcare workforce that reflects and serves the region.
This vision came to life at the Healthcare Careers for Future Graduates networking event, a powerful gathering that brought together college students, healthcare professionals, and employers to engage in meaningful conversations about career possibilities. With structured roundtable discussions, mentorship connections, and honest dialogue, the event bridged the gap between classroom aspirations and real-world opportunity.
As the event’s organizer, I watched students walk in unsure of their paths and leave with clarity, confidence, and tangible next steps. Several secured mentorships and internships that day. One student told me, “I didn’t think someone like me could become a nurse until I met someone who did.” That’s the kind of impact we hoped to make—and the kind I’ll never forget.
Planning this event pushed me to grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I learned how to manage a multi-faceted project, balance perspectives from different sectors, and adapt in real time when challenges emerged. From coordinating event logistics to crafting a communication strategy for the Alliance, every step was intentional. I built relationships with employers, gained insights from my mentors, and leaned into feedback to create an experience that felt truly collaborative.
But the greatest takeaway wasn’t just the skills I gained—it was witnessing the power of connection. This event wasn’t just about job leads or polished résumés. It was about possibility. It was about showing students that healthcare careers are not only accessible but supported by a network of people who believe in them.
I’m incredibly thankful to Indiana University South Bend, the North Central Indiana Healthcare Talent Alliance, and our many community healthcare employers for believing in this work. A special thank you to Campus Compact and The Allstate Foundation, whose support helped turn this vision into reality. Together, we created a moment that sparked futures—and we’re just getting started.
