From the president

Joshua Neff is an aspiring History teacher who is energized by educating his peers about voting and advocacy. Over the past two years he has strengthened his civic agency through visits to the MA State House and by being part of a community with common goals. He has a deep understanding of local politics and has practiced different methods of advocacy, which helped develop his confidence in representing his own interests and in teaching others about the importance of their voice. As a Voting and Civic Action Ambassador, he is engaged in building a stronger civic culture at BSU that ensures every student feels knowledgeable and confident to engage in voting and other civic actions. Joshua wants to foster a space where peers can come together to discuss critical issues and become inspired to get involved in their communities. As a future educator, he understands that putting energy into small but manageable changes can yield great results. With his logical thinking, and collaborative approach, Joshua is well equipped to continue to build upon the civic action programs at BSU while building a stronger community.

Personal Statement

I am Joshua Neff, a second-year student at Bridgewater State University (BSU). During my first year at BSU, I worked with the Old Colony YMCA in their after-school program. I found fulfillment serving kids and families there. The ability to positively impact people's lives was profound, giving me a new appreciation for how small acts influence a community. That same year, I joined the local Alternative Spring Break program at BSU, which took me to Boston and gave me the opportunity to meet my elected representatives. That trip broke down barriers for me and helped me recognize my power as a constituent. I now work with the Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice, the same organization that offered the Alternative Break program. I have the honor to be part of the first-ever cohort of Voting and Civic Action Ambassadors (VCAA). I have gained experience running voter registration events and crafting voter and advocacy resources for our campus. From this experience, I gained a greater understanding of how to support students and influence change. In my junior year, I hope to carry this momentum forward, helping lead a new cohort of VCAAs and developing programs that keep students civically engaged.
