Personal Statement
Service starts with recognizing a problem and taking action to make change. Junior year of high school I was exposed to the crimpling effects of food waste and food insecurity in our country but specifically my community. I was given the amazing opportunity to do a deep dive on the food crisis in my area through my research class. From that point on, I took on every opportunity to advocate and learn more about this sad problem by introducing a bill at the America Legion Auxiliary Girl State Program and volunteering at a local non-profit. In efforts to continue promoting awareness and change for food insecurity, I became a service advocate at Salve. Through the service advocate program, I have been working with the MLK center as weekly volunteer in their hunger services. My role ranges from stocking the food pantry to assisting the cite manager with community outreach. I have had the opportunity to directly engage with the community and hear stories of hard working and caring individuals. Being active in my environment has given me the chance to be a part of the solution and not the problem.
