Personal Statement

I believe my commitment to civic involvement such as engaging in service projects, civic affairs in the community, or taking action around governance-related issues makes me a strong candidate for NIU’s Newman Civic Fellowship. Specifically, I have been a strong advocate for student engagement and participation in law, politics, and governance. As a member of NIU’s DREAM Action, a student-led organization, I have participated in events designed to increase awareness about issues faced by undocumented students in the U.S. and at NIU. During my summer internship with the Chicago Bar Foundation and the Honorable Judge James Snyder at the Daley Center in downtown Chicago, my organizational skills allowed me to assist unrepresented litigants through the judicial process successfully. Likewise, as a member of NIU’s Mock Trial Club, I have participated in a number of intercollegiate mock trial competitions where I have played the role of an attorney in trial simulations. I recognize the impact that NIU has had on my life and future career potential and have endeavored to “pay it forward.".
