From the president

Alex is a valuable member of the Worcester State community, and his efforts to revitalize our Political Science club as an active hub of student engagement with politics, current events and civic engagement is a key example of his enthusiasm for the kind of work that the Newman Civic Fellowship supports. Alex is also a mentor for Upward Bound, where he provides high school students with support to increase their critical thinking skills, time management and problem solving. As a rising Junior, we expect Alex to leverage the Newman Civic Fellowship year to develop an exciting plan of action for his senior year.

Personal Statement

Working on reactivating the political science club at my university, I was able to engage with many parts of my campus community. Working with other student organizations, faculty, and staff to bring a dormant club back to life was difficult, but seeing students wanting to get involved was an extremely rewarding opportunity. I focused on developing initiatives that would encourage student interest in political science and civic engagement with events that incorporated student input with current events. One of our most meaningful events was a presidential election night viewing party, where students gathered to watch the results of the presidential election unfold in real time. For many, it marked the first occasion to observe the vote-counting process in which they had voted. In which they were also able to engage in discussions concerning the democratic system.
