From the president
A.J. is dedicated to civic engagement, advocacy, and community building, particularly for marginalized communities. AJ is the founder of Chosen Family and through this work has created opportunities for over 200 artists, performers, and small businesses to connect, network, and grow in an inclusive and supportive environment. AJs is committed to fostering community through creative leadership and increasing understanding the need for systemic challenges. Through leading workshops like Creatives for Social Change, AJ empowers individuals to use their artistic talents for social impact. His experiences in event planning, nonprofit leadership, and grassroots organizing reflect his ability to translate vision into action—qualities that will allow him to thrive in his continued role as a social change-maker.
Personal Statement
Growing up, I was not given many opportunities to reach milestones that spring individuals forward into their identity and space in the community. Being born into an impoverished and uneducated family was not a recipe for success. At 18, I decided to take control of my future and start building the foundation of the life I wanted to live. That consisted of many opportunities to learn, expand, and utilize the “each-one-teach-one” concept. Everything I provide the community, weaving resources like education tools, harm reduction, and even basic needs have been building blocks I was given along the way. I strongly believe in the power of community, listening to understand, and building a longer table, not a higher fence. Like Maya Angelou said “We are more alike than we are unalike.” Conversation and diversity are tenets to fortify foundations that we see cracking. It is our job as civic agents to leave the community better than when we entered. Channeling my civic superpowers helped me navigate the way for others. I am nothing if I do not acknowledge those who helped me, but I stay stagnant if I do not use my creative attributes to foster a stronger community for others.
