VISTA Positions

Campus Compact is looking for talented, emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds and experiences to commit to a year of national service to make a lasting impact and break the cycle of poverty. Positions for the 2020-2021 VISTA cycle are now posted in the MyAmeriCorps.gov portal. We are currently recruiting for positions in CT, IL, MA, MI, NE, RI, VA and WI. Campus Compact VISTA members are leveraged to build capacity in one of four anti-poverty priority areas: Education, Economic Opportunity, Healthy Futures, and Veterans and Military Families and serve in a cohort-based program of 70 members. The start dates are July 20, 2020, August 3, 2020 and August 31, 2020 and October 26, 2020. You must complete and submit your application to sites you are interested in the MyAmeriCorps Portal to apply. The process is competitive and positions fill quickly, apply early!

Benefits of Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA service include: Choice of Segal Education Award or end of service stipend, bi-weekly living allowance (determined by county), relocation allowance (if moving more than 50 miles),  basic health coverage, student loan forbearance or deferment if eligible, Non-Competitive Eligibility (NCE) for 1 year after the successful completion of VISTA service, ongoing training, support, and professional development,  and childcare assistance if eligible. The VISTA serving at Bridgewater State University will build capacity for Girls’ Inc Taunton, Bridgewater State’s Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies and the Martin Richard Institute for Social Justice focusing on growing partnerships and deepening the partnership between Girls Inc. Taunton and Bridgewater State. The VISTA member will increase capacity by reviewing and revising the current curriculum used by Girls Inc. to align with the latest physical educational standards while conducting research and creating assessments. The College for Social Innovation (CFSI), is a Boston-based non-profit organization that has partnered with New England colleges and universities and 100+ Boston area anti-poverty organizations to build organizational capacity while helping to educate and inspire the next generation of social problem solvers. CFSI and its college and community partners seek to engage a VISTA to build capacity and dramatically expand the Semester in the City (SITC) experiential education program to support a bigger, better prepared, and more diverse talent pipeline for Boston’s leading anti-poverty and social justice organizations. The Program VISTA will build new partnerships with anti-poverty missioned organizations, build capacity for 100+ social impact organizations that CFSI works with through additional talent referral and capacity building projects, and enable CFSI to meet the learning and credit completion needs of a diverse group of participants by broadening the number of low-income students who can access an internship related to their academic major and career interests.

The Massachusetts Department of Higher Education (DHE) is among the first state agencies in the U.S. to respond to student homelessness as a matter of intentional, state-level public policy. The VISTA will play a pivotal role in building the capacity of the Department to expand its work to address basic need security for low income individuals. The VISTA will coordinate efforts to expand and refine regional on-campus and off-campus housing pilots that began in 2019, and will organize a broad coalition of stakeholders to think and respond strategically to the full array of basic needs insecurities – housing, food, transportation and child care – that prevent many low-income college students from earning degrees.

Springfield College has a long history of engaging students in service with the surrounding neighborhoods by developing partnerships with schools and other community-based organizations around campus. The VISTA member will continue to support and expand upon Springfield’s legacy through the development and expansion of an intervention program leveraging Springfield College students, designed to increase the academic success of K-5 youth at William N. DeBerry Elementary School, located a mile from campus. The anti-poverty focus of this program is to contribute to narrowing the achievement gap for low-income students to help lift this generation of youth out of poverty.

University of Massachusetts Dartmouth: North Dartmouth, MA - POSITION FILLED!

The Campus Compact VISTA will be housed at UMASS Dartmouth’s Leduc Center for Civic Engagement, which helps students engage in service activities at local community-based organizations and schools through volunteering, tutoring/mentoring, or service-learning projects. The VISTA will play an integral role in developing and ensuring the long term success of “Project Success”, a pilot program focused on developing an ethos of service as a strategy for success and retention for low-income students at UMass Dartmouth. The VISTA will achieve this goal by conducting research to identify best practices around community service activities, building on data collection tools and methods, and developing resources, training models and service toolkit to support newly recruited Retention and Engagement Coaches (RECs).

UMass Lowell’s River Hawk Scholars Academy (RHSA) supports the transition of low-income families. The RHSA has made major strides in the past couple of years with the capacity building efforts of VISTA members and are eager to continue to advance that work and make a real difference in helping students and their families end the cycle of poverty through degree completion. The VISTA will help the RHSA program revise and execute current assessment benchmarks and tools, tell the story of the program, create resources and supports for students, identify and secure outside funding sources and internal supports, design programmatic systems and processes, and refine the program’s peer leader and mentoring initiatives. Wheaton College’s goal is to improve the efficacy and sustainability of the Reach & Rise, Women on the Rise, and the Student Leadership Collaborative programs at the Attleboro YMCA. The anti-poverty focus of these three programs is to contribute to narrowing the achievement gap for low-income students through offering vulnerable Attleboro and Norton youth mentorship, leadership development and life skill-building opportunities intended to improve their academic and behavioral outcomes. The VISTA will contribute to the capacity building goals of the project by helping to: 1) refine the recruitment methods and on-boarding techniques for mentors and mentees in these programs; 2) continue to expand opportunities for year-round engagement; 3) develop grant proposals for funding opportunities to ensure the programs’ continuity; and 4) solidify the online management system for all of the data about the target programs.

The VISTA will help build the infrastructure and capacity for the central Massachusetts regional “STEM Ecosystem” a partnership between Worcester Polytechnic Institute and low-income pre-K-12 students, educators, and their families. The goal is equitable access to high-quality, integrated, and inclusive STEM education opportunities in central Massachusetts! 

Member Duties : The VISTA position bridges the pre-collegiate outreach programs with the STEM Education Center to help build the infrastructure at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) to sustainably support PreK-12 students, educators, and families in the region with equitable access to high-quality, integrated, and inclusive STEM education opportunities. The VISTA will support STEM opportunities for Worcester County PreK-12 students, teachers, and families; build a sustainable infrastructure for WPI students to volunteer with local community based organizations for enhanced STEM learning; and develop a database of volunteers, events, and program assessment. The VISTA will also develop trainings for volunteers for community K-12 STEM outreach and tutoring; coordinate meetings with partners at WPI, Worcester Public Schools, and Worcester County Community Based Organizations; create marketing/social media plan for STEM events in the community; and present recommendations to WPI staff.

Our leaders support our multi-state cohort of AmeriCorps VISTA members in IL, MA, CT, RI, VA, WI, NE, MI, and MA. VISTA Leaders are hired on a rotating basis. Campus Compact is a coalition of colleges and universities in dedicated to advancing the public purposes of higher education and a national intermediary sponsor for AmeriCorps VISTA. A projected 70 VISTA members are expected and are leveraged by higher education institutions and their school and non-profit partners to build capacity at for education, economic success, healthy futures, veterans and environmental programs that directly impact economically disadvantaged individuals, As a corps, Campus Compact VISTA members benefit from shared training and professional development while collaborating throughout the service year both regionally and by their project focus. Drawing on your previous AmeriCorps, VISTA, or Peace Corps experience, you will be part of a team of up to five VISTA leaders and three staff members supporting the personal and professional development of Campus Compact’s cohort of AmeriCorps VISTA members throughout their service year. Three positions will be located in Massachusetts in Worcester, MA and two in Illinois in the metropolitan Chicago area. A driver’s license and access to a vehicle are essential for this position, overnight travel is required. Partial rent support paid directly to the landlord is available for VISTA leaders as well as access to professional development opportunities through Campus Compact. **Please note: You must have served a full term as either AmeriCorps Member, VISTA member or Peace Corps member to be eligible to serve as a VISTA Leader. However, if you exited AmeriCorps/NCCC/Peace Corps early for compelling circumstances due to the COVID-19 and completed at least 51% of your service term, you are eligible to apply to serve as a VISTA Leader.

The VISTA Leader will assist in the creation and provision of member training, technical assistance, resources and support to the national Campus Compact cohort . The VISTA leader will maintain regular communication with an assigned portfolio of members and host site program staff via phone, email, periodic in-person meetings and site visits. In addition to building the annual training and member support program, VISTA Leaders also work on data collection and evaluation, research and develop resource materials for VISTA host sites and members, build capacity for social media and lead annual recruitment. Capital Community College is in the final stages of creating its Center for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion to address the non-academic barriers that prevent students from completing coursework, graduating, and ultimately being successful. The VISTA project aims to support this mission by building capacity to comprehensively improve food security. The VISTA member will support the newly created Capital Cares Pantry, and engaging in a holistic approach, will work with members of the Student Activities Office and Foodshare to develop and execute a comprehensive plan to reduce students’ need for food assistance and develop healthy eating habits.

The Holleran Center VISTAs will work to address local education inequality through an anti-poverty lens regarding middle school school success. The VISTA member will work closely with Connecticut College Holleran Center and Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School to implement and solidify a sustainable framework for the school’s after-school program. Additionally, the VISTA member will coordinate with area community partners to identify ways to strengthen the connection and increase the City’s capacity to offer robust after- school opportunities for New London students.

Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) is committed to ensuring the success of all of its students, and is motivated to alleviate barriers unique to low-income SCSU students. The goal of the project is to develop capacity for SCSU to serve the needs of low-income students through an equity approach. The VISTA will be instrumental in working in partnership with campus departments to define the scope and direction of current and future initiatives. The VISTA will build capacity by conducting research into best practices in family engagement programs at other institutions, developing an assessment to better understand the needs of our students and families, and creating a workshop series to support a new program.

Naugatuck Valley Community College (NVCC) serves students from the greater Waterbury area. To VISTA will address equity in academic achievement. NVCC is committed to alleviating barriers unique to the student body. In 2018, a student food pantry was established to ensure students in need of food assistance have access to nutritious foods. In line with AmeriCorps VISTA anti-poverty goals, the VISTA will help support low income students through the expansion of services currently provided by the NVCC Student Food Pantry. The objective of this project is to minimize the non-academic obstacles students face by providing them and their households’ access to food and ancillary services. As a result, the college anticipates increased retention rates, higher degree completion rates, and higher employment rates.

The VISTA serving at Asnuntuck Community College will build capacity in the institution’s Food Pantry and Wellness Center by developing a holistic student support services program that will extend the safety net for low-income students and help them achieve their educational goals. The VISTA member will increase capacity by fostering community-based partnerships to strengthen and improve effective community engagement around food justice and food insecurity. The VISTA member will also mobilize & train community volunteers, leverage resources, and conduct research to establish a sustainable system for effective data collection and management.

Housatonic Community College’s (HCC) mission is to empower all individuals to develop to their full potential as lifelong learners and inspire its students to contribute to its dynamic regional and global society. Working with the Student Success Division to further this mission, the VISTA member will help put into action a peer mentorship program to prioritize college success for our students, increase retention, and break the circle of poverty amongst Housatonic Community College students. The VISTA will be tasked with coordinating the program including updating and expanding curriculum, recruiting & training mentors and identifying participants, conduct research to ensure best practices are met and develop presentations & reports to effectively relay program successes and areas of growth. Tunxis Community College is at a unique and exciting juncture in their institution’s history. The VISTA project will continue to build capacity for the Summer Bridge Program, expand outreach to our target population through the colleges Early Alert Referral System (EARS), and refine best practices for connecting our population to the college resources and social environment; and support 150 at risk, low-income, students. The VISTA will perform activities such as outreach and research for the continuance of the summer bridge program.These initiatives are aligned with the anti-poverty goals of AmeriCorps VISTA and will focus on post-secondary education support.

James Madison University’s (JMU) Civic Action Plan includes a vision of engagement on multiple levels: engaged learning, civic engagement, and community engagement. National Louis University Veterans and Military programs mission is to support the needs of NLU student veterans, military connected students, and the National Louis University community as a whole. The THRIVE Resource Center will move beyond a Food Pantry and serve as a single point of contact for essential wrap around services such as emergency assistance, a book exchange, pro bono legal advice, and social services referrals. North Central College is launching an ambitious career readiness program for students that will feature an all-college internship/apprenticeship requirement. The VISTA will build capacity for the Engaged Learning Facilitators (ELF) program. ELF was crafted to support low-income students financially and remove barriers to success by providing them with a campus job, and enhancing their career-readiness; both aspects have been empirically demonstrated to promote low income students’ persistence through college. In support of the anti-poverty goals of the Americorps VISTA program, the VISTA will develop training opportunities, curricula, and programs catered to low-income student workers focused on professional development and post-graduate employability. The VISTA will work with college leadership to expand paid-work/peer-mentoring opportunities for low-income students. The Panther Resource Closet (PRC) serves students in need of food, hygiene products, and professional clothing. The VISTA project would support the expansion of the PRC to provide additional food to students in need, centering on providing nutritious foods to students who may otherwise have limited access to these items, as well as providing other referral and outreach services to holistically address food insecurity in our students. The VISTA project will increase engagement of high poverty P-12 schools and UNO departments using service-learning pedagogy to address poverty in Omaha, increase awareness of needs identified by individuals and groups currently experiencing poverty as previously collected from community, and establish collaborative relationships with neighborhood organizations, governmental organizations, small businesses and/or nonprofit organizations in proximity to high poverty schools. The ultimate goal of this project is for the Service Learning Academy to be a hub for anti-poverty focused service learning projects. The biweekly living allowance for this position is $479.08 in Douglas County, NE. In addition to the benefits listed, the host site will provide a public transportation pass and conference attendance. The AmeriCorps VISTA serving at University of Nebraska Omaha will be part of a dynamic, motivated corps with Campus Compact VISTA. Serving as a member of a corps provides VISTAs the chance to connect with members throughout multiple states, create a network of support, and to share resources. As the intermediary, Campus Compact, a national non-profit, supports the professional and personal growth of VISTA members through a variety of professional development opportunities and in-person trainings including overnight retreats throughout their service year.
