The Haas Center for Public Service is seeking a Director of Community Engaged Learning (DCEL) to lead the center’s curricular efforts in the area of environmental sustainability. Reporting to the Associate Director for Community Engaged Learning and Research, this position works alongside four other DCELs, each with a distinct thematic focus (education, health, engineering, and the arts). Collectively, this team supports faculty across campus in developing and supporting community engaged learning courses (Cardinal Courses) and capstone experiences. The DCEL for environmental sustainability builds and maintains relationships with external community organizations working to advance sustainability and environmental justice, and partners closely with a number of related campus units engaged in related efforts. The DCEL-EV also oversees a place-based initiative at the Haas Center, Partnerships for Climate Justice in the Bay Area (PCJ in the Bay), including supervising one full-time program associate. PCJ in the Bay works closely with community-based organizations and public agencies primarily in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties on collaborative projects that advance climate justice in our region.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and/or maintain a portfolio of community engaged learning courses (i.e., service-learning courses) that adhere to Stanford’s Principles of Ethical and Effective Service and foster civic leadership competencies through sound pedagogical practices.
  • Consult with faculty on community engaged learning pedagogy, including designing appropriate learning goals and instructional activities, facilitating student preparation and reflection, and evaluating student learning and community impact.
  • Collaborate with faculty/instructional staff to develop and deliver community engaged curricula, including facilitating workshops and trainings.
  • Build and sustain partnerships with nonprofit and community-based organizations, government agencies, and social impact-oriented companies, identifying reciprocal opportunities for students to learn and contribute to community partners’ work.
  • Manage the Partnerships for Climate Justice in the Bay Area initiative, including supervision of full-time Program Associate for Environmental Sustainability, with the goal of building long-term partnerships with organizations working on climate justice and programming to engage students through all dimensions of Cardinal Service as well as community engaged research.
  • Contribute as a member of the DCEL team on the administration of Cardinal Courses and related programs, including managing Cardinal Course grants, reviewing Cardinal Service Notation applications, among other responsibilities.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education, training, and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required for some programs. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans.
  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

  • Advanced degree and/or scholarly and professional accomplishments in a relevant field, indicating an ability to work as a peer with university faculty is required. Ph.D. preferred.
  • Experience with curriculum design, and teaching or facilitating learning experiences for diverse student populations.
  • Understanding of, and experience with, the principles and practice of critical service-learning and community engagement in a higher education context.
  • Academic training and/or professional experience relevant to environmental justice and sustainability.
  • Knowledge of or experience with environmental justice issues and organizations in the Bay Area is desired.
  • Teaching experience, preferably at the college level, is desired.
