AmeriCorps VISTA

The Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA Program

AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal service program designed specifically to fight poverty. Founded as Volunteers in Service to America in 1965, VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 40 years.

Campus Compact VISTA programs focus on building the capacity of campuses and communities to address the root causes of poverty in partnership and through community-based learning. Our state programs:

  • Improve college access and success
  • Increase college readiness
  • Bring community voice to campus
  • Build the capacity of higher education institutions to strengthen communities
  • Improve service-learning courses that address the root causes of poverty
  • Empower students with civic skills to be community advocates
  • Develop the skills of VISTA members and students in community organizing, volunteer management, and community partnership development

Since 1997, Campus Compact VISTA programs have grown to involve hundreds of VISTA members working on campuses and in communities through our state affiliates across the country each year. Our state Campus Compact VISTA programs together form the largest VISTA effort in the nation.

Campus Compact VISTA members are placed on Campus Compact member institutions and their community partner organizations. Each program is administered by a state Campus Compact, who organizes trainings, provides one-on-one technical assistance to VISTA members and supervisors, and supports VISTA members throughout their year of service. At each site, VISTAs are supervised and supported by a host site supervisor, who orients the VISTA member to the site and their work, support and collaborate with the VISTA member to complete his or her work plan, and provide regular, constructive feedback to the VISTA member.

Campus Compact VISTAs are in 27 states nationally, including CT, FL, HI, IL, IA, KY, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, MT, NH, NY, NC, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, UT, VT, WA, WV, and WI. Each state places VISTAs on campuses in different ways, so contact the state affiliate you’re interested in for application details. For states that place VISTA applicants on campuses, applicant preferences and qualifications are significant in the placement process.

Who We Look For

Campus Compact VISTAs come from a variety of backgrounds with different professional goals, but all are prepared to take leadership in planning and managing projects and inspiring students, faculty, staff and community members to take action together. Campus Compact VISTAs act as change agents on a campus and in a community and have a demonstrated commitment to poverty alleviation through community engagement and education. We look for candidates with strong written and verbal communication skills who will empower communities, leverage institutional resources, and build capacity for sustainable social change. Most state Campus Compact programs require that VISTAs have a Bachelors or Associate’s degree.
