What Anchors Need to Know About Affordable Housing: Case Study Presentations

In the spring of 2024, Campus Compact will offer a six-part series about the ways higher education anchor institutions can support and contribute to the supply of affordable housing in their communities. This series is an extension of the HUD + Higher Ed Engagement Network that Campus Compact operates along with partners at Anchor Institutions Task Force (AITF), Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU), and University Economic Development Association (UEDA). Members from all four organizations are welcome to participate in this learning community.

Within the learning community, participants will be presented with various ideas and approaches for addressing, analyzing, and partnering locally to address affordable housing shortages. Specific discussions on finance and urban design will be supplemented by experts in the field, offering participants practical and real-world case studies involving recent projects illustrating the scope and methods of affordable housing development.

In this session: A template is provided to each participant at the start of the learning community for completion in assessing their individual institution’s relationship to affordable housing, their capacity to address the issue and how they would organize to address the topic. At the conclusion of the series participants can volunteer to share with the team a case study of what they learned and how they would present an affordable housing proposal to their anchor leader.
