The Institute for Civic Leadership aims to advance the civic leadership capacities and commitments of women and to promote the civic and democratic purposes of higher education. Community service is strongly rooted in virtually all religious traditions. At St. Francis College, students learn to see the connection between service and Christianity in a variety of ways. “Trends in Nursing” students attend “Nursing, the Community and Legislation” seminar

Four students enrolled in Trends in Nursing attended a seminar at the New Jersey State Nurses Association regarding the legislative process. As a result of what they learned from the seminar, the students interest was piqued, motivating them to follow a bill through the legislative process regarding mandatory overtime. Subsequently, they attended a senatorial committee meeting where they witnessed first hand the importance of their participation in the political process, as well as how their support and involvement could make a difference within the community. Our educational model for our first-year students is unique. Our Autumn (August) Term, resulting in a 1-4-1-4 academic calendar for first-year students, provides our students a more personalized academic experience to help them make the transition to our College. The best way to explain a good one-day service effort is to start with the ways such efforts are criticized. The CultureLinks Program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania is a service-learning option for enrolled international students. CultureLinks is sponsored by the Office of Service Leadership in the Department of Student Activities and Organizations in collaboration with the Office of International Affairs. Instrumental Methods Analysis Course: reinvigorating a dull and difficult course

At Loyola University in Chicago, Instrumental Methods Analysis was once a course notorious for being both dull and difficult. The only students who enrolled were senior chemistry majors who were required to take the course. Faculty dreaded teaching it.
