IUPIU Research Academy

May 17 - May 19

Sponsored by the Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) Center for Service and Learning (CSL), the Research Academy is an intense, interactive 2 ½ day workshop designed to develop research skills, learn about methods and service learning literature, and develop a research project related to service learning and community engagement. Held annually since 2009, the Research Academy convenes each year in May as part of the week-long conference Connecting Campuses with Communities, which also includes a Service Learning Institute (SLI) sponsored by Indiana Campus Compact.

Providing a mix of high quality information and mentoring, the Research Academy is a professional development opportunity that supports research and scholarship focused on service learning and community engagement. The design invites participants to develop collaborations with fellow practitioners and researchers to enhance their work and contribute to a collective understanding of the field. The objectives of the Research Academy are to:

  • Strengthen research on service learning and community engagement in higher education
  • Advance the scholarship on teaching and learning
  • Provide consultation and feedback on research proposals
  • Build a network of community engaged scholars

 Learning Communities

A significant amount of time during the Research Academy is dedicated to learning communities where attendees are divided into groups of 6-8 based on their background and research interests.  Facilitated by two Research Academy faculty, these highly supportive and interactive sessions

  • advance attendees’ ability to formulate and refine a research question
  • identify theories to frame their research
  • establish methods to gather data needed
  • determine the appropriate design, methodology and timeline.

Learning communities meet four times and during the final session attendees present their proposed research. Within the learning communities, attendees are provided constant and constructive feedback from both the facilitators and fellow attendees. Prior attendees have presented at national conferences and been published in peer reviewed journals on research conceptualized and planned during the Research Academy.

Additionally, the Research Academy is comprised of plenary and concurrent sessions that cover:

  • Research rigor and design for both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Designing surveys
  • Theoretical frameworks
  • Advanced quantitative and qualitative methodology
  • Civic learning outcomes (Civic-Minded Graduate, Civic-Minded Professional)
  • Strategies for engaging faculty in service learning & community engagement
  • Measuring community impact
  • Publication outlets and strategies for engaged scholars
  • Digital scholarship

Attendance and Financial Information

The target attendance for the Research Academy is 34. Registration fees for the Research Academy are $300 for faculty and staff and $200 for graduate students. For groups of 3 or more, there is a $50 discount per person.  For those attending both the Research Academy and SLI, the fees are $550 for faculty and staff and $350 for graduate students. The faculty facilitators are drawn from CSL staff (3), other IUPUI faculty and staff (5), and colleagues from other universities (3), who are provided an honorarium ($1,000) or reimbursement for hotel and travel expenses. In 2016, the research academy had total income of $8,394 and expenses totaling $6,183.16. The profit of $2,210.84 is used to subsidize complimentary registrations and to serve as a hedge for potential shortfalls in future years.
