IUPIU Research Academy

May 17 - May 19

Sponsored by the Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI) Center for Service and Learning (CSL), the Research Academy is an intense, interactive 2 ½ day workshop designed to develop research skills, learn about methods and service learning literature, and develop a research project related to service learning and community engagement. Held annually since 2009, the Research Academy convenes each year in May as part of the week-long conference Connecting Campuses with Communities, which also includes a Service Learning Institute (SLI) sponsored by Indiana Campus Compact.

Providing a mix of high quality information and mentoring, the Research Academy is a professional development opportunity that supports research and scholarship focused on service learning and community engagement. The design invites participants to develop collaborations with fellow practitioners and researchers to enhance their work and contribute to a collective understanding of the field. The objectives of the Research Academy are to:

  • Strengthen research on service learning and community engagement in higher education
  • Advance the scholarship on teaching and learning
  • Provide consultation and feedback on research proposals
  • Build a network of community engaged scholars

 Learning Communities

A significant amount of time during the Research Academy is dedicated to learning communities where attendees are divided into groups of 6-8 based on their background and research interests.  Facilitated by two Research Academy faculty, these highly supportive and interactive sessions

  • advance attendees’ ability to formulate and refine a research question
  • identify theories to frame their research
  • establish methods to gather data needed
  • determine the appropriate design, methodology and timeline.

Learning communities meet four times and during the final session attendees present their proposed research. Within the learning communities, attendees are provided constant and constructive feedback from both the facilitators and fellow attendees. Prior attendees have presented at national conferences and been published in peer reviewed journals on research conceptualized and planned during the Research Academy.

Plenary and Concurrent Sessions

Additionally, the Research Academy is comprised of plenary and concurrent sessions that cover:

  • Research rigor and design for both quantitative and qualitative research
  • Designing surveys
  • Theoretical frameworks
  • Advanced quantitative and qualitative methodology
  • Civic learning outcomes (Civic-Minded Graduate, Civic-Minded Professional)
  • Strategies for engaging faculty in service learning & community engagement
  • Measuring community impact
  • Publication outlets and strategies for engaged scholars
  • Digital scholarship

Quotes from Research Academy Attendees

“The Research Academy was one of the most productive professional experiences that I have had as a faculty member.  The design of the academy was excellent in causing me to generate projects and a protocol to move these projects forward.   The staff provides excellent advisement and council and facilitates workshop time that allowed me to walk away with a very specific plan of action to keep my work moving forward upon my return to campus.”

Dr. John Traynor, Jr. (2016 IRA Attendee)
Department of Teacher Education
Gonzaga University

“My time at the research academy was inspirational in supporting my growth as an engaged scholar. Not only was I provided foundational knowledge in research methods, but also afforded the opportunity to develop a concrete research plan for an upcoming project. The small group discussion and feedback from my peers and the staff was invaluable in providing critical and collaborative insight in my work!”

Dr. Lindsey Payne (2016 IRA Attendee)
Assistant Director, Service Learning
Assistant Professor, Environmental & Ecological Engineering
Purdue University

“It was incredibly beneficial to hear from and work together with a group of faculty and staff from diverse departments and academic units. Community engagement is not always the norm in my department, and obtaining cross-disciplinary perspectives and theories was very valuable to me. The Academy moved from theory to practice, and the small group work helped me to operationalize my idea.  I was able to determine my assessment strategies and to move the needle forward for improving student learning at my institution.”

Dr. Bridget Trogden (2015 attendee)
Associate Professor of Chemistry
Director of Research that Reaches Out (QEP) for Mercer University

“The IUPUI Research Academy has been very helpful to service-learning faculty members at Virginia Commonwealth University.  The academy provides a wonderful mix of both high-quality information and mentoring.”

Dr. Lynn E. Pelco (2013 attendee)
Associate Vice Provost for Community Engagement
Virginia Commonwealth University
